The Constitution Education Fund Australia (CEFA) was delighted that the ABC’s Compass program, broadcast July 1 2007, recognized the Australian flag as the foremost symbol of our nationhood.
In the first of a two-part story on the Australian flag, the Compass program provided an excellent summary of the history and heritage of the Australian flag as well as its importance in contemporary Australia. The program highlighted that in modern Australia citizens do fly and display the flag as a symbol of unity and harmony on many different occasions and in many different facets of life. CEFA’s Executive Director, Mrs Kerry Jones, featured prominently on the program. Her lesson on the Australian flag with the Islamic children from Al-Zahra’s College is an example of the importance of structured civics education for Australian schools. “CEFA’s programs compliment the civics components of State and Federal syllabuses, such as Australian history, values education, Discovering Democracy, social studies, human society and its environment, legal studies and the workings and history of Australian politics and law”, Kerry Jones stated today. She further added: "In 2007 and beyond, CEFA aims to promote greater awareness amongst Australians of our national symbols through a number of educational initiatives that seek to enhance our citizenry with the cherished values of democracy, tolerance, harmony and freedom."
