Over 90 Local Governments from across Australia have seized the opportunity to host an AusCivics Spring Festival for their local community in September/ October 2010. AusCivics has been created to engage and educate young Australians about the constitution and the five pillars of Australian democracy in new, interesting and fun ways. AusCivics; The National Imperative, in partnership with the Australian Electoral Commission, is working towards creating awareness through this month long national film festival in venues Australia wide. The festivals will feature informative civics education stands and screen films such as ‘Broken Hill’. It will be themed around civics education and voting through the CEFA five pillars and ten values (www.cefa.org.au)
Mrs Kerry Jones, Executive Director of the Constitution Education Fund Australia (CEFA) addressed the National Convention for Local Councils held recently in Canberra on June 16th. She told Mayors and local council representatives that “All surveys show that over half of Australia’s youth don’t know Australia is a democracy, or don’t care. That’s our problem, and yours, but it gives rise to our new opportunity through national civics education.” Mrs Jones was delighted with their response adding “Local councils right across Australia are embracing the opportunity to engage young people in this wonderful initiative” The festivals will launch in Broken Hill from Saturday the 11th of September. They will then be held in over 300 venues across Australia, and a VIP opening night in each centre will have the net proceeds donated to local community charity, chosen by the local Mayor. Mrs Jones added “most communities have already made request for an AusCivics Spring Festival in their town. The closing date to register your local council is fast approaching, so contact CEFA now to register.” Contact The Festivals Team: The Constitution Education Fund Australia (CEFA) Level 13189 Kent Street Sydney NSW 2000 GPO Box 64 Sydney NSW 2001 Ph: 02 9251 8511 Fax: 02 9251 8677 Toll Free: 1800 009 855 Web: www.cefa.org.au
