Melville Primary School is the first Western Australia’s Schools to Launch CEFA School Parliament
March 19, 2010
Melville Primary School, Perth, has successfully opened its CEFA School Parliament with outstanding results. Mr Adrian Eaton, Year 7 teacher from Melville attended workshops conducted by the Constitution Education Fund Australia (CEFA) in December 2009.
The CSP offers a variety of pathways to implementing schools because CEFA recognizes that each school is unique and requires a tailored process for their own school or class parliament. Mr Eaton stated that Melville Primary School decided on allowing the year 6 and 7 students to elect their Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Ministers together with Deputy Ministers. He added that this process involved electioneering activities such as speeches, posters and preferential voting and those elected are responsible for carrying out various functions around the school in the various ministries formed. He also added that they have the Sport, Health, Justice, Finance, Education, Environment, and Communication ministries each with a Minister, Deputy Minister and 7 advisers.
Mr Eaton finished his statement by saying that once they are comfortable with this process they will look at involving more students and increasing the scope of parliament. The student parliamentary sitting was an absorbing experience for the teachers and students in attendance and has inspired them to improve the authenticity of this learning experience in their school during the 2010 academic year. Mr Eaton must be congratulated for his outstanding effort in immersing his class and Year 6 in this dynamic learning experience.

We will continue to follow the progress of the Melville Primary School Parliament in the year ahead and once again congratulate Mr Eaton on his wonderful efforts in helping to develop a new generation of informed and active citizens. We also wish to convey our congratulations to the student parliamentarians at Melville and wish them well in their debating and deliberations in future sittings of their Parliament.
