October 23, 2009 CEFA convened Professional Development for Queensland Primary and Secondary schools in the next phase of its national training for the implementation of school parliaments. The workshop allowed teachers to explore the possibilities of implementing a class/school parliament and create a new generation of active and informed citizens. Mr. Perna presented a variety of implementation models to the participants as each school is unique and requires a tailored process for their own school or class parliament. Teachers found the DVD footage of the many schools that have already implemented a school parliament to be both inspiring and instructional. The excellent resources that were given to each participant will also assist them in the teaching and learning process. CEFA’s School Parliament mentor, Mr. Richard Wood, was in attendance and found the workshop to be both informative and engaging. CEFA is most appreciative of the many mentors like Mr. Wood, who support the work it does educating children around the nation about our democracy and the processes within it. Mr. Perna stated: “The teachers in attendance today were highly enthusiastic about the possibility of creating a dynamic learning experience for their students. The discussion was vibrant as participants spoke about both the challenges as well as the exciting prospect of creating a mini-democracy in their school. Much of the workshop emphasized the need to engage our children in an exciting learning experience that would make them more active and informed citizens in the future.” Schools represented were: Springwood SHS Ipswich Girls Grammar School Ipswich State High School Towoomba SHS (Mount Lofty campus) West Moreton Anglican School St Saviour's College Toowoomba Park Ridge SHS Centenary Heights HS Toowoomba SHS (Wilsonton campus) Fairview Heights Primary School CEFA’s next Professional Development will take place in Perth WA in December 2009 to complete a program which has seen workshops conducted in the ACT, NSW, Queensland and Victoria. |
