On May 8 2009, CEFA continued its national professional development program for Australian teachers with a training day held at Firbank Grammar School, Brighton Victoria.CEFA’s Parliaments in Schools Director, Mr Don Perna, facilitated a workshop for Victorian primary and secondary schoolteachers at the Shared Learning Centre and showcased the capacity of class and school parliaments to address the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS Level 4 and Level 6)
Introducing the training Mr Perna stated: “CEFA has developed pathways for all class and school parliaments to address state and territory syllabus outcomes for Australian students in civics and citizenship. Teachers attending CSPs professional development are realising that student parliaments are a dynamic and engaging learning activity that will assist them in providing the structure to best achieve these outcomes as well as fostering deep learning for students. Parliaments in schools help students to attain broad civic knowledge while simultaneously providing opportunities for community engagement that is required by curriculum documents.
