September 11, 2008 On Monday, September 9, in the CEFA sponsored NSW Premier's Debating Competition, Caringbah High School and Hornsby Girls’ High School debated the topic ‘that we should remove protections for industry from the proposed carbon-trading scheme.’
The 2008 State Final of the Premier’s Debating Challenge for Year 11 was held in the Maiden Theatre at the Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Participants from both schools put forward sophisticated arguments both for and against the proposal. All speakers spoke with vigour on their respective positions and provided great entertainment and educational values to a captive audience. In a hard-fought contest, Caringbah High School who were the negative emerged as the winner with particularly sound economic argument balanced with a sympathy for the environment and were awarded the Karl Cramp Trophy for 2008. CEFA was represented at the debate by Executive Director, Mrs Kerry Jones. At the conclusion of the debate Mrs Jones presented the participating students with their medals and trophy. She congratulated the students on their sterling performances and reiterated CEFA’s desire to continue its ongoing support of debating civics issues across NSW.
