April 7 2008 Today The Parliamentary Club Civics, Citizenship and Values Education Initiative was presented at the Illawarra 2020 Ideas Summit in the category of ‘Governance’ and will be forwarded on to the Federal Government’s 2020 summit hosted by the Prime Minister in Canberra on 19 April 2008.
CEFA’s Director of The Parliamentary Club National Initiative, Don Perna, was invited to address the summit in the McKinnon Theatre at the University of Wollongong after his submission, detailing the initiative’s capacity to produce a new generation of highly informed and active citizens, was chosen by Ms Jennie George MP and Ms Sharon Bird MP as the most innovative idea. Ms George and Ms Bird are both highly supportive of The Parliamentary Club initiative as each has had first hand experience visiting CEFA’s pilot schools, and can see the massive potential it has to engage young Australians in learning about our nation’s democratic processes and understand their role as citizens within a democratic society.

The Parliamentary Club initiative addresses the key topic of ‘Governance’ chosen by the Rudd Government as one of 10 key areas to be explored in Canberra on April 19 this year. Governance - the future of Australian governance: renewed democracy, a more open government (including the role of the media), the structure of the federal government and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. |
